WHAT IT IS:

​

The 5 x 10 is a project by the artist McKendree Key.  The 5' x 10' is a roving bar in New York City which features conversation, drinks and atmosphere curated by the bartender, who changes on a rotating basis.  The bar fits a limited number of guests only and is restricted to guests vetted by the bartender.  The only access to the 5 x 10 is through an entrance that is often locked.

There were once well over 20,000 speakeasies in NYC, many of them in Brooklyn.  Now, even where alternative spaces do exist, they are in constant fear of being outpriced, deported, or steamrolled.  Precarious are the outposts of artistic expression: artist-run spaces, artist-used spaces and family owned spaces.   The 5 x 10 is a small part of the resistance to this scripted purification of our city.  It’s also a brick and mortar opportunity to delve deeper into the now radical act of face-to-face conversation.

RULES OF THE 5X10:

​

• All guests must abide by the rules of the bartender

• Access is through an entrance that is often locked.  There may be a long, eventful walk to the entrance of the bar. You must be on time at to be allowed entrance to the bar.

• Drink responsibly and quietly.

• All guests must pay in full before the night of the event.

• There is no bathroom.  You must be comfortable peeing outside, or not at all. No shits shall be taken. 

• Once you have paid, and not before 24 hours before the event, you will be emailed the location and further instructions (dress code, if any, etc.)

• Guests may only take and post one photo from inside the bar

• The cost is $60 per person.  This includes all drinks and any food offered.  Tips are additional and are appreciated.  To buy tickets please email thefivebyten@gmail.com with your requested date and number of people.   If there is room, you will be sent a link for payment.

• Payment ensures your reservation, and reservations are final.  No changes to reservations can be made.
